Friday, September 18, 2026
Holland, Michigan

Each year the Van Raalte Farm Civil War Muster emphasizes education by offering a field trip opportunity for school children (usually 5th grade, but other grades are welcome.) Two sessions are available on Friday, September 19, at Van Raalte Farm. The reenactors will be on site offering five stations in each session.
The morning session will run from 9:30 to 11:30; the afternoon session will run from 12:00 to 2:00.
Students will have an opportunity to see the stories in their history books about the 1860’s and the Civil War come to life. They will experience firsthand the lives of the soldiers and of the civilians who supported them.
- The Civil War Soldier in Camp – Living conditions, equipment, food, and fun
- The Civil War Soldier in Battle – Weapons & training
- Meet the President & Famous Generals – Famous figures from the war will greet and speak to students
- The Civil War Lady – Life at home including clothes, living standards, games & food
- Civil War Music – Period music & historic instruments
Space is limited to 300 students per session; sign-up will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
In keeping with the educational component, the entire weekend’s events on Saturday and Sunday, will be free of charge. If you cannot participate as a class on Friday, please encourage your students and their families to visit the Muster over the weekend. Highlights will include reenactments of the First Battle of Bull Run, civilian and military camps, special historic impressionists, music, medical scenarios, period-style vendors, and much more!
We look forward to seeing you this fall!
